It was serialized in the semi-monthly Japanese magazine Hana to Yume, published by Hakusensha, from 1999 to 2006. The series tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphan girl who, after meeting Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Sohma, learns that thirteen members of the Sohma family are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac and are cursed to turn into their animal forms if they embrace anyone of the opposite sex. The name was derived from a popular children's game, called Fruits Basket.

After a number of criminals suddenly die, talk on the internet leads to the deaths being attributed to a mysterious killer that is deemed "Kira" (the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"). As the death toll quickly continues to rise, law enforcement agencies around the world begin to take notice and all are unable to find any reason for the deaths to have had occurred. Unbeknownst to Light, a Detective known only as "L" has also noticed the strange deaths and is already on Lights tail. After publicly voicing his intention to find Kira and bring him to justice, a cat and mouse game begins between Light and L as they both try to stay ahead of the other and uncover their opponents name.
