The Money in the Bank ladder match (sometimes referred to as MITB in shorthand) is a professional wrestling ladder match held by WWE. It was first contested in 2005 at WWE WrestleMania 21 and was then exclusive to Raw Superstars. From 2006–2010, the MITB match became a WrestleMania tradition, and had become open to all WWE brands.
In July 2010, a second and third Money in the Bank ladder match was held in the same year as WWE debuted the Money in the Bank PPV. Unlike when the match took place at WrestleMania, this new PPV featured two ladder matches - one each for a contract for the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship respectively.
Before the establishment of the annual Money in the Bank pay-per-view, wrestlers were allowed to use the contract to claim a match for any world championship in WWE. After the establishment of the MITB PPV, wrestlers were then only able to challenge for the designated title related to their match.
With the unification of the WWE and World Heavyweight titles into the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in December 2013, there is now only one single briefcase/contract in play, which is for the now unified title. This went into effect beginning at the 2014 Money in the Bank PPV.
The 2017 Money in the Bank pay-per-view took place on June 18, 2017 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri as a SmackDown brand exclusive event. For the traditional ladder match, which had a contract for a match for SmackDown's WWE Championship, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon announced that for the first time, it will involve women to determine the number one contender for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship Carmella won the match & received a SmackDown Women's Championship contact after James Ellsworth climbed the ladder, grabbed the briefcase and tossed it to her.
